Waxy Caps on Bolinas Ridge

Rendered in oil on a raw birch panel, this tondo painting invites the viewer to crouch down into the damp quiet of Bolinas Ridge Trail, where a cluster of luminous golden waxy caps rises from the forest floor alongside two vivid scarlet companions. The 24-inch circular composition plays with scale and perspective, as a subtle fisheye lens effect draws the eye through scattered pine needles, fallen leaves, and moss-draped wood, while a collapsed log anchors the background and a whisper of blue sky opens at the horizon. The warm burnt sienna underpainting breathes through in passages across the forest floor, lending the earth a resonant inner glow that unifies the composition’s rich palette of deep greens and umbers.

The brushwork moves fluidly between loose, expressive passages in the foliage and moss and more deliberate, polished strokes on the mushrooms themselves, their waxy, almost lacquered caps rendered with a luminosity that makes them feel both hyper-real and otherworldly. The exposed birch edges, sealed for lasting preservation, extend the work beyond the picture plane, grounding the painting in its material as much as its subject. This is a painting about stillness and discovery, the reward of slowing down long enough to notice what the forest floor is quietly offering.

Why buy an original when I can just buy the print?
A one-of-a-kind artwork will make your space your own. How often have you noticed the same Ikea artwork in several friends’ living rooms? Even if the artwork isn’t by a well-known artist, the originality of the piece evokes more of a sense of wealth and personality into your living space.

Investment
The great thing about buying artwork is that it can often appreciate in value. Unlike furniture or Pottery Barn statement pieces, artwork typically does not lose its value for having been pre-owned. Instead, if you invest smart, your artwork may be worth more after years hanging in your living room than it was worth when you first bought it.
