Guided by the natural wood grain, a melting aesthetic unfolds across a transparent gradient from bright sky blue to warm birch, wrapping cleanly around the panel edges. Vivid orange California poppies (Eschscholzia californica) weave through painted and scratched grass in rich greens, deep blues, and blacks. A bumblebee gathers pollen on the central bloom while surrounding flowers drift across the melting boundary, accented by visible pencil undersketches that honor the raw studio process.

A winding trail serves as the visual throughline, guiding the eye from bright foreground poppies toward the quiet, distant mountain. Deliberate shifts in style mirror the landscape: grasses and rolling hills are rendered with loose, expressive gestures, while wildflowers feature tactile realism that captures the uplifting energy of cresting a sunlit hill.

]]> Waxy Caps on Bolinas Ridge https://jacoblacour.com/product/bolinas-ridge-mushrooms-wood-panel-oil-painting/ Sun, 07 Jun 2026 23:05:32 +0000 https://jacoblacour.com/?post_type=product&p=6668 Rendered in oil on a raw birch panel, this tondo painting invites the viewer to crouch down into the damp quiet of Bolinas Ridge Trail, where a cluster of luminous golden waxy caps rises from the forest floor alongside two vivid scarlet companions. The 24-inch circular composition plays with scale and perspective, as a subtle fisheye lens effect draws the eye through scattered pine needles, fallen leaves, and moss-draped wood, while a collapsed log anchors the background and a whisper of blue sky opens at the horizon. The warm burnt sienna underpainting breathes through in passages across the forest floor, lending the earth a resonant inner glow that unifies the composition's rich palette of deep greens and umbers.

The brushwork moves fluidly between loose, expressive passages in the foliage and moss and more deliberate, polished strokes on the mushrooms themselves, their waxy, almost lacquered caps rendered with a luminosity that makes them feel both hyper-real and otherworldly. The exposed birch edges, sealed for lasting preservation, extend the work beyond the picture plane, grounding the painting in its material as much as its subject. This is a painting about stillness and discovery, the reward of slowing down long enough to notice what the forest floor is quietly offering.

Painted on a 24" × 24" birch hardwood panel, the circular composition commands the natural warmth of the exposed, archival-sealed wood grain, creating a tondo-like frame that feels both classical and contemporary. Loose brushwork in deep forest greens and rich earthy browns conveys the living energy of the canopy, while burnt sienna underpainting pulses through the layers with warmth and depth.

]]> Standing beneath ancient giants, this dynamic oil painting captures the sublime verticality of a Douglas fir forest through a worm’s-eye perspective rendered in the spirit of a fisheye lens. Painted on a 24″ × 24″ birch hardwood panel, the circular composition commands the natural warmth of the exposed, archival medium-sealed wood grain, creating a tondo-like frame that feels both classical and strikingly contemporary. Loose, confident brushwork in deep forest greens and rich earthy browns conveys the living energy of the canopy, while a pale blue sky opens at the apex, drawing the eye ever upward through the radiating trunks. Warm flashes of burnt sienna underpainting pulse through the layers, giving the work a luminous depth that rewards close looking.

At 1⅝” deep, the panel presents beautifully whether framed or displayed as-is, with the sealed birch edges forming a natural border that integrates seamlessly with the composition. This is a painting about scale, wonder, and the humbling experience of standing at the foot of something ancient, an invitation to look up and feel small in the best possible way. The impressionistic handling of light and texture keeps the image alive and breathing, hovering between the documentary and the lyrical. A singular work for any collector drawn to the natural world rendered with both skill and genuine feeling.

Looking straight up from the forest floor, the artist captures the dizzying grandeur of these redwoods, hoping the piece gives viewers a profound sense of quiet majesty and deep immersion.

]]> Now framed and ready to hang in a custom natural wood floating frame with a 1-inch matte black shadow reveal, “Iridescent Giants” captures the dizzying vertical scale of ancient redwoods along Bolinas Ridge in Marin County, California.

Looking straight up from the forest floor into the soaring canopy, the dramatic perspective invites viewers into a quiet state of deep immersion and reverence. Painted in oil on a handcrafted cradled birch wood panel (48″ x 24″), the rigid surface allows for tactile, expressive brushwork. Rather than heavy dark shadows, the trunk radiates with unexpected energy: iridescent purples, teals, and deep greens layered over a warm, glowing burnt sienna underpainting that vibrates against the electric green canopy.

The custom floater frame suspends the panel within a clean architectural profile, fitted with an installed French cleat system for secure, flush hanging.

]]> “Keyhoe’s Edge,” an original oil painting, captures the raw beauty and untamed spirit of Keyhoe Beach at the farthest reaches of Point Reyes National Seashore. This 12″ H x 12″ W x .75″ D birch panel painting immerses the viewer in a dynamic coastal scene, where massive grey rocks, adorned with striking purple-blue seaweed, dominate the sandy expanse. The interplay of light and shadow, rendered with a square brush and liberal impasto, creates a palpable sense of movement in the cerulean waters, from the foamy waves crashing midway through the composition to the delicate drainage of tide pools around the nearest boulders. A vibrant burnt sienna underpainting peeks through the distant waves, adding an unexpected warmth and depth to this otherwise cool palette of blues, greys, and browns.

Executed in a captivating realistic-impressionistic style, this piece invites contemplation of the rugged Northern California coastline. The loose, angular brushstrokes not only define the forms of the ancient rocks but also evoke the very energy of the ocean, conveying both the immense power and serene beauty of this remote beach. The burnt sienna edges of the panel provide a cohesive and thoughtful framing for this vivid depiction of a beloved natural treasure. “Keyhoe’s Edge” is a compelling acquisition for collectors who appreciate the unique allure of Northern California’s dramatic shores, the captivating artistry of impressionistic landscapes, and the timeless appeal of coastal themes.

Three black cows stand as silent observers before a creeping grass fire, their dark forms stark against the golden ochre of the dry field. Inspired by a local news broadcast of a local fire in Fairfield, California, this piece freezes a moment of surreal tranquility as the encroaching flames and a plume of grey smoke contrast with the clear, bright blue sky. The artist masterfully creates a narrative that is both specific in its local origins and universal in its themes of nature, observation, and the unpredictable forces that shape our landscape. The scene invites contemplation, leaving the viewer to ponder the thoughts of these stoic creatures and the unfolding drama before them.
